ExxonMobil unveils new high-performance rubber compounds

2024-06-04

Oil and gas giant ExxonMobil has announced the development of two new high-performance rubber compounds designed to improve durability and performance in demanding industrial applications.

The new compounds, named Santoprene™6600 TPV (thermoplastic vulcanizate) and Santoprene™7100 TPV, were formulated to address the needs of the automotive, aerospace, and construction industries, where high-stress and high-temperature conditions typically cause degradation in traditional elastomer materials.

Santoprene™6600 TPV is a low-density compound that offers improved sealing and shock-absorption properties, making it ideal for use in automotive and construction applications. Its superior compression set and heat resistance also make it suitable for use in high-temperature environments.

Santoprene™7100 TPV, on the other hand, is a high-density compound that is optimized for use in aerospace applications where high strength and durability are essential. The compound offers excellent resistance to jet fuel and hydraulic fluids, making it an ideal choice for use in aircraft seals and gaskets.

Both compounds were developed using ExxonMobil's advanced polymer technology, which combines the strength and durability of traditional rubber materials with the flexibility and ease of processing of thermoplastics.

According to Alistair McGilvray, ExxonMobil's product manager for specialty elastomers, "These new compounds offer significant advantages over traditional elastomers, providing improved performance, reduced weight, and increased durability in demanding industrial applications."

The compounds are currently being marketed to customers in North America, Europe, and Asia, and are expected to be widely adopted in a range of industrial applications.
